Your Business Logo is like a Fishing Lure

Choosing the right fishing lure is not much different from choosing the right logo for your business. Have you ever seen how many types of lures there are? Fresh water, salt water, Bass, Salmon, Swordfish, Shark and on and on and on. There’s probably millions of lures, all designed to attract a specific type of fish under specific conditions. If you choose the wrong type of lure you may not catch the “Big One” you’re looking for, so it’s important to choose the right lure.

Your logo is no different! Your prospective customer is the fish and you want your logo to appeal to them. Especially when there is competition, you need to stand out. It’s important to keep this in mind when you want to add your personal touch to the logo. Yes, all you “TYPE A” personalities listen up! Although it is your business, it’s important to step back and think of the business first! Avoid trying to add things like your child’s favorite color, animal, etc. Remember it’s all about what the “Big Fish” (your customer) will relate to. For example, if you are selling a new product directed towards men, let’s just say a tool of some kind, then using your daughter’s favorite color lavender may not be so well received. But, if that tool was being marketed to women, it would be fine.

Keep this analogy in mind when you choose a logo designer for your project. Always request samples and ask for the thought process behind the samples. Who is the target market for each image and why did they create the logos the way they did? Sometimes, a client can be demanding and the image may result in something different than what the designer intended. This can be a great way to see the designer’s vision and how outside opinion can affect the end result.

The bottom line is to understand your target market and realize you are designing the logo for them! If you hire a qualified logo designer there will be reasons for why he/she created each logo they designed. Those reasons should ultimately be to attract customers to that business and/or product.
